Find the work your firm has already done

For litigation and regulatory teams of 20 to 100 lawyers in the UK and the US. In a 15-working-day Matter Knowledge Sprint, we test whether your lawyers can find and reuse relevant work from past matters, with every result linked to the document it came from. Your lawyers keep the judgement.

The problem the sprint tests

Useful work from past matters is hard to find again.

Pleadings, submissions, opinions, chronologies and research notes sit across the document management system, shared drives, email and what individual lawyers remember. When a new matter raises a familiar question, people search, ask a colleague or start again.

The sprint does not assume your systems or your lawyers are falling short. It measures, on your own questions, whether a source-linked search across one team’s past work saves time worth paying for, before anyone commits to a larger project.

How the sprint runs

15 working days from the day the documents are ready.

One practice group, one workflow, one agreed document set, ten benchmark questions and three test lawyers. Live meetings total under three hours; the rest is asynchronous.

  1. 01

    Choose the workflow

One repeated question your team answers from past matters, the economic reason to fix it now, and the people who will test it.

  2. 02

    Set the baseline

Ten benchmark questions, how lawyers find the answer today, and written pass and fail criteria agreed before anything is built.

  3. 03

    Prepare the document set

We index a bounded historical or sanitised export that you choose, and report duplicates, formats and missing metadata. Nothing outside it is touched.

  4. 04

    Build the matter workspace

A browser-based search across that set, where each result opens the passage and the document it came from. No live DMS integration is needed.

  5. 05

    Test with your lawyers

Three designated lawyers work through the ten questions and rate relevance and time to evidence. One round of revisions follows.

  6. 06

    Decide

Results against the baseline, limitations and failure cases, and a stop, refine or expand recommendation. Documents are deleted or handed over as agreed.

What you receive

Evidence your partners can decide on.

Matter value blueprint
The selected workflow, the current process and its cost in your own figures, ten benchmark questions and the criteria the sprint is judged on.
Document readiness and trust boundary
What is in the document set and what is excluded, its gaps, and who is responsible for processing, access, retention, deletion and review.
Source-linked matter workspace
A working search across the agreed documents, with every result linked to the passage it came from.
Lawyer evidence test
Ratings from your three test lawyers on relevance, time to evidence and the questions it handled badly.
Decision pack for the sponsoring partner
The measured result against the baseline, the risks that remain, and a recommendation your partners can act on.

Who it is for

A team with a repeated question and the documents that answer it.

It is not a firm-wide knowledge programme, a replacement for your document management system, or a way to produce legal advice without a lawyer. Those can come later, if the evidence supports them.

  • An independent firm of roughly 20 to 100 lawyers with litigation, disputes, regulatory investigations, white-collar or fraud work

  • A question your team keeps answering from past matters, with a reason to fix it this quarter

  • A bounded historical or sanitised set of pleadings, submissions, opinions, chronologies or notes

  • A sponsoring partner, a data owner and three lawyers who can test it

What we have built on legal documents

The same mechanics, on public data you can try.

These products run on published judgments, not client matter archives. They show the ingestion, parsing, citation links and search the sprint applies to your own documents.

Questions partners ask first

Doesn't our document management system already do this?

It may. A DMS stores documents reliably and finds them by name, number or keyword. The sprint tests something narrower: whether a lawyer can ask a matter question and get the relevant passage from past work. If your current search already does that, the benchmark will show it and we will say so.

Our documents are inconsistent. Does that rule us out?

No. The first days of the sprint are a readiness check of the export: duplicates, formats and missing metadata. Gaps are written down, and the results are reported with them in view rather than hidden in an average.

What if the system makes something up?

Every result points to a passage in your own documents, with the source one click away. It is not legal advice: a lawyer reads the source and decides how to use it. The test records the questions it handled badly as well as the ones it handled well.

How do you handle confidentiality and privilege?

You choose the document set, and it can be historical or sanitised. Processing, access, retention and deletion are agreed in writing before any document is shared, and nothing outside the agreed set is touched.

Will finding work faster reduce billable hours?

It changes where time goes. The sprint measures time to evidence on your own benchmark questions; whether that matters most for fixed or capped fees, write-offs or turnaround is for your partners to judge with their own figures.

Do you work with US firms?

Yes. The sprint runs remotely for firms in the UK and the US, with two hours and forty-five minutes of live meetings in total, and proposals are priced in your currency.

Start with one matter question.

Tell us the question your team keeps answering from past matters, and where that work lives today. We’ll reply by email with how the sprint would test it, what we would need from you, and what stays with your lawyers. You don’t need to send any documents.
